Right Words

One day I’ll find the right words,

And it will be simple.

I’ll put them in a specific order,

And it will be simple.165232622_640

I’ll give them limited but precise grammar,

And it will be simple.

I’ll create a noteworthy quote,

And it will be simple.

I’ll be a creator, a destroyer

And it will be simple.

Or…

One day I’ll tell the truth,

And it will be difficult.

A perpetual dance.

“… you just get better with time,

want you to write a book about us”

It was closing in on 3 am in the morning but the smile on his face could have replaced the impending sunrise. A few clicks later his word document was open and for an hour his fingers danced, waltzing memories across the keyboard, tap dancing in punctuation and a bit of free-styling emotion.

At the end of the hour, his heart beating like the rhythm of tribal drums, he inserted a full stop and reclined in his seat. Having read over what he had written, his recent emotional high seemed like a distant memory. The pages he had written were not part of a story, they were not an epic tale consisting of a myriad of memories, they were simply an enduring love letter.

It seemed as if he was under the illusion that he could never truly lose someone if he wrote about them enough. However, by inking her into eternity, he was simply making love to her with prose and in doing so, his writing in those pages showed him how much he had lost.

He took his glasses off and laid them over the keyboard, a sign of resignation. Remembering what she said, he shut his eyes and drifted away.

You never know the outcome.
I want the world to know… to know
Our story.

1 Year On

A year ago, I created the blog that you are currently browsing. With terrible handwriting and far too much to say I embarked on what has been a tumultuous adventure of experimenting, expressing and eliciting responses from readers.

Early on I realised that blogging is a lonely task. You stare at a blank page and watch it fill up as your fingers furiously dance along the keyboard and your thoughts and emotions become form letters, words and eventually posts. This trend continues from post to post and eventually you become addicted to your statistics page and seeing how receptive internet users are to the nonsense you regularly write.

For a year now, I’ve consistently posted on topics ranging from economic failures to relationship failures. I’ve managed to sadden, anger and amuse people. However, a moments pause allowed for doubts to flood in.

Am I just posting the same things?

Am I experimenting enough?

Am I writing for myself or for the occasional reader?

Then gas ran out and I reached hotel ‘writer’s block’ and that’s the ball game. At the end of the game, you can either stick around for another innings or go home. I went home for a week or two and realised all the “googling” I was doing was only filling my cranium with more ideas and opinions. So here I am once more, ready to start a new innings ready to write for another year. This year like the previous one will see tirades on the world economy, the odd music review and many heartfelt posts. Yesterday’s done. It’s time for Today. It’s time for Tomorrow.

Ready? Let’s go.

“To – write” list

So, I recently wrote a verbose piece about verbosity.  Then, I was introduced to this phenomenon of sophisticated simplicity, better known as Fiction – 55If you cannot be bothered to click on the link, let me explain what fiction 55 is.

Basically, it is a form of micro-fiction which requires the author to create a piece with a maximum of 55 words. The piece must also consist of; a setting, one (or more) characters, a conflict and a resolution.

The title of the story is not included in the 55 word limit, but cannot exceed seven words. “Why?” you ask. Well, the creator of fiction 55 is a fan of magic, in which 7 is the most magical number.

Point is, I want to try fiction 55, but have no clue how to limit thoughts in my brain to 55 words. It’s a side effect of being verbose, don’t hate. But I will try and I encourage all of you to do the same. Seeing as I’m such a benevolent human being, I’ve added two links below to two different, but fantastic styles of 55 word fiction. I do hope the authors of the respective pieces do not mind.

Just Write.

Ever experienced the infamous ‘writer’s block?’ Everyone, including the author of the book you’re too lazy to read once had a writer’s block. But the question is ‘How do I over come a writer’s block?’

Now, I could simply outline a five step method;

  1. Get an Idea –> What do you want to write about? Do you want to write about current issues or do you want to write about writing… make up your mind! People say it’s not a writer’s block… it’s an idea block…
  2. Start writing –> The hardest part of writing is probably the first paragraph. Once you finish tussling with all the ideas in your head and pen the first paragraph, the rest… is easy
  3. Cope with Crap (C.W.C) –> Get used to writing utter nonsense… Don’t wait for perfection, but constantly work towards it. The path to success is lined with failures… you get the message.
  4. When am I going to write? People have many oddities, one of them being our ability to only do certain things at certain times. When do you feel most inspired? Is it after that awful episode of Jersey Shore or is it after listening to Rebecca Black?
  5. Just Write.

But what’s better than a five step method?

A one step method that incorporates all 5. The means to go through with that method was introduced to me by a fellow blogger and close friend. She linked me to oneword  where everyone is given one word and a 60 second time limit to write anything. I mean it… anything. One word to me was a free flow writing exercise that allows for raw expression on a given word. No one marks your work and there is no right or wrong thing to write.

Oneword allowed for me to learn how to quickly find a thought and then type something in 60 seconds. Then, if inspired by the raw work,  like any work of art or movie, you take it and edit it to form a final piece that you and others can admire.

The only flaw, and frustration with one-word is the fact that it is one word per day… But all you need is one word and from there on you can fill any piece of paper or blank webpage.
